In 1993 proposals were developed for improved facilities at Naval Point, which led to the commencement of construction of the Magazine Bay Marina in 2000. However during construction, a southerly storm destroyed the offshore floating structures and the development ceased.
Move forward to February 2006 and the Banks Peninsula District Council allocated $5.9m to assist in the development of onshore public facilities at Naval Point. As yet this funding remains largely untouched.
In 2013, funding was provided to commission a report into a proposal to improve boat safety at Naval Point. Plans for the Magazine Bay water-sports facility were developed and enthusiastically received by the water-sports community and supported by the Lyttelton/Mt Herbet community board as an urgent solution to improve boat safety.
As yet no funding has been allocated in the long term plan.
